Key Messages
Opportunistic infections (OI) are the leading cause of mortality among people living with HIV (AIDS) because OI and HIV mutually fuel one another. Several simple
interventions prevent illness, prolong life,  or prevent HIV transmission in PLHIV in Africa. These include:
?  Insecticide-treated bed nets;
?  Safe water system;
?  Latrine facilities and hygiene practices;
?  Safe infant feeding and nutrition;
?  Cotrimoxazole chemoprophylaxis
?  Vaccination;
?  Family voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) and;
?  Oral hygiene and care.
